Trezor.io/Start | Starting® Up® Your® Device®

This beginner’s walkthrough focuses on the exact sequence most new users need. It’s plain-language, step-by-step, and includes safety checks you should never skip.

Unboxing & initial checks

Before plugging anything in, inspect packaging and tamper seals. Trezor devices are shipped with anti-tamper features; if anything looks damaged or previously opened, stop and contact support. Keep packaging until setup is complete.

Connect and boot

Use the supplied cable to connect the device to your computer or phone. The Trezor should display a welcome screen and a hardware identifier. On your host device open the official Trezor Suite app or go to the official site and follow the verified link to the Suite.

Firmware verification & install

The host will verify your Trezor’s firmware. If an update is recommended, apply it — only through the official Suite. Firmware updates close security holes and ensure your device is genuine. Never install firmware from untrusted sources.

Creating your recovery seed

The device generates the recovery seed (12/18/24 words). Write down each word on the supplied card. Do not photograph or store digitally. If using a steel backup plate, follow its instructions to transfer words correctly. Your seed is the last-resort key to funds — protect it accordingly.

PIN & optional passphrase

Set a PIN when prompted on the device. PIN entry is randomized on the screen to prevent shoulder-surfing. Consider the passphrase feature only if you understand it; the passphrase acts as an extension to your seed and cannot be recovered when lost.

Test transaction

Send a small test amount to a receiving address, confirm the address on-device, and verify the transaction in the Suite. This step confirms your setup is correct and you can sign transactions safely.
